Passionfish

Over the holiday weekend, we took a drive out to Pacific Grove, CA with the idea of watching the pacific ocean crash on the rocks for a while and getting a bite to eat. We arrived at our favorite spot at Pacific Grove (away from touristy crowds and the inner Monterey Bay area with its too calm water) where the waves were huge and blue-green and crashed against the rocks with much dramatic effect – ahhhhh!

Pacific Ocean at Pacific Grove, California

After we’d rejuvinated our souls with the sound of surf and seagull cries, we hopped back in the car and drove down the main drag looking for a place to eat. Unfortunately, it was Monday, and most every restaurant we spotted had a ‘closed’ sign in the window, although we did find two that seemed open. One had a large neon ‘OPEN’ sign, but we soon realized it was the same restaurant that we ALWAYS eat in when we come out this way. Not that there’s anything WRONG with that, but we were in the mood for something new and uncharted. The only other place we saw was an unassuming building on the corner with the sign “Passionfish” outside – we guessed it was a restaurant because there were people sitting in there at tables, and the word ‘fish’ in the sign, but it wasn’t incredibly obvious.

Passion Fish restaurant at Pacific Grove, California

It looked a little more swanky than what we’d planned, but it seemed like a good bet, so we stepped inside. First thing we noticed were all the wine racks and linen tablecloths – yup, definitely more swanky! The decoration was simple elegance and seemed to fit the place. After we were seated, we glanced at the menu and saw at the top that they only used fish caught through sustainable fishing techniques! We hadn’t been consciously looking for a ‘green’ restaurant, but it looks like we found one – yay for synchronicity!

And as I implied, the food was expensive but fantastic. The sourdough bread was very tasty and came with super-whipped and chilled butter. (I know olive oil is ‘cool’, but I still prefer butter.) I had pulled lamb and handmade noodles in a reduced oregano sauce with olives and baby spinach leaves. John ordered the Alaskan Halibut topped with a sweet red chili sauce, over Sicilian vegetables in a sweet and sour sauce. We both had water (someday we should go back just for the wines!) until we heard the server telling the people seated near us that they didn’t have fountain drinks like Coke, but instead served soft drink made with cane syrup instead of high fructose corn syrup, so we had to split a bottle, sort of as a dessert. Turned out to be Boylan’s Sugar Cane Cola which was VERY tasty – like a cream cola almost.

When our server (a friendly, down-to-earth, but professional woman) brought the bill she didn’t include mints as restaurants often do, but a small pocket guide about what kinds of seafood were fished responsibly, which were known to have mercury contaminants, etc. It was done in such a simple and unassuming way though that it wasn’t annoying at all, although usually I hate people trying to “educate” me with information they want to impart when I didn’t specifically request it.

So if you’re ever in the Monterey or Pacific Grove area of the Central Coast of California, check out the Passionfish Restaurant – at least for the amazing food, but also for their conscientious approach to cooking… and maybe also for their EXTENSIVE wine list!

Marverick BBQ Review

Tonight we decided to visit Maverick BBQ, a local restaurant that’s gotten rave reviews from my boss and a couple of other acquaintances around town. We don’t have a rating system on this site, but if we did I would’ve given about two out of five stars. The experience wasn’t all bad, but we certainly won’t be going back.

I ordered the BBQ Chicken with potato salad and beans on the side and Kristen ordered the Ranch Burger and Fries. My boss had praised Maverick’s for having the best burgers in Hollister, but Kristen wasn’t impressed. She said that it didn’t compare to the Colossal Burgers at Jerry’s Restaurant. For one thing they used shredded lettuce on the burger which fell everywhere, and the bun fell apart just as she started biting into it. She also realized that the fries had seasoning salt on them. She asked the waiter for a replacement order after having only eaten two. He said to her “as a side?” and she said “yes” assuming he meant that she didn’t want to send the cheeseburger back. Instead, they actually charged us for the extra fries as a side dish!

The chicken I had was excellent. The meat was tender and the skin was crispy and tasty. The potato salad was delicious, except for the portion size. Both sides came in little 3oz cups that were gone in about four forkfuls. Considering this was a 15.00 meal I was more than a little put off by the tiny portions.

The restaurant itself was smaller than we expected, with perhaps one too many tables packed in. Even though it was half full, we felt crowded, and the servers frequently bumped against the back of my chair as they passed. The chairs themselves were also not very comfortable, and the waiter was so efficient in clearing the plates that we felt like were being rushed to get out of there. The noise level was also louder than it should have been for such a small place. Since we weren’t comfortable, we paid the bill as soon as it came and left to get dessert in the local Foster’s Freeze.

We didn’t realize that they had charged us for the fries until after we had left, otherwise we would have spoken to the manager and challenged it. But in all the places we’ve ever been to over the years, whenever something was sent back without being eaten it was always replaced for free. The fact that they charged an extra 2.95 seemed really tacky.

Sweet Earth Chocolates

John and I found a terrific store that sells only organic, fair trade chocolate products! We got a bit of this and a bit of that from the chocolate catalog at Sweet Earth Chocolates to try them out. Like bars of bittersweet chocolate, organic cocoa, and real peanut butter cups! They were all fabulous, and not as pricey as I’ve seen in other retail shops online. (I don’t even know where we’d begin to look for this type of product locally!) I also made delicious chocolate chip cookies with their chocolate chips, although they were so big that I had to snap them in half, which turned the cookies into chocolate CHUNK cookies – still delicious though – LOL. So if you want to feel even BETTER when you eat chocolate, check out the wonders at Sweet Earth Chocolates.

Kendall-Jackson 2005 Special Reserve Zinfandel

I happened to catch Narsai David on the radio the other day on the way to the grocery store, and he was recommending a bottle of wine from Kendall-Jackson. Their 2005 Special Reserve Zinfandel. And I was actually able to find it in the store, so we bought it! And even if this story doesn’t have much in the way of drama, it does have a happy ending – LOL – in that we really liked the wine. Was lovely and fruity, with lots of excellently blended flavors. (I think we bought it for around $10.99.)

The weird thing about this story is that we have satellite radio for the car, which kicks in right when you turn the car on, so when I thought back, I wasn’t exactly sure WHEN I heard Narsai David as he’s on the local AM radio. Finally, I figured it out. When we were getting gas, we were under the little roof over the gas pumps so we weren’t getting satellite radio, and in the few seconds (less than a minute) before I turned the car back on and drove away and the satellite radio came on, I must have heard this review. That’s the kind of thing where there was such a small window to be able to hear this information that I have to believe it was divine intervention from the wine gods. Heh.

Wine & Champagne for the Old & New Year

First, for the old year! Late December we decided to branch out in our white wine consumption and purchased a Riesling – J. LOHR 2005 Bay Mist Monterey County White Riesling to be exact. (I have no explanation for why we hadn’t had a Riesling in so long, since it’s one of my favorite whites!) It was fabulous – light and fruity with just enough flavorful punch to it! Will be getting this one again, for sure.

And now for the New Year! Okay, technically we drank this on New Year’s Eve, but it was already 2007 in most of the world when we opened the bottle, so it counts. I’d never really had a ‘good’ champagne before so we made sure that we tried it in the store before we bought it. (There was a champagne tasting going on in the store, otherwise I probably would have skipped it. My first champagne experience was a cheap brut extra extra dry that had been sitting outside during a hot summer day, but luckily I wasn’t scarred for life.) This was Chandon’s Riche Sparkling Wine – not very dry at all, which is what we were looking for. It was nicely sweet and bubbly but not excessive, with just enough crispness to give it an edge. I’m pretty certain that sparkling wines pack more of a wallop than an equal amount of non-sparkling wines though – either that or the timewarp of flipping to a new year caused some unanticipated havoc with my brain cells. Perhaps more experimentation is in order. In any case, we declare the Chandon Riche a success as well.

Time for Wines

Over the last few months we’ve tried a number of wines that we’ve been meaning to write up, but just haven’t gotten around to it. So, in an attempt to put SOMETHING in writing, here’s a brief summary just to get something posted!

Elena 2005 Sauvignon Blanc – Very flavorful – fruity but crisp, and easy on the throat.

Kenwood 2004 Pinot Noir – I’d like to try a few more Pinot Noirs to have a little more to compare this to, but overall it was a thumbs up.

Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) Coastal Estates 2005 Sauvignon Blanc – we’re of two minds about this one. I thought it was a little rough on the edges, but John thought it was more bold than rough. Or maybe it’s just our vocabulary that needs better judgment – heh.

Yellow Tail 2005 Cabernet Merlot – Interesting wine – 70% Cabernet and 30% Merlot, but not really tasting like either. Goes down a little smoother after the first glass. Flavorful, almost a hint of sour, in a wine sort of way.

Well, it’s not poetry, but at least it’s online!

2004 Blackstone Chardonnay

Wanted to post this quick review before we forgot! The 2004 Blackstone Chardonnay (Monterey County) was an excellent, and rich wine. Rather velvety and strong, but went well with the hard-ish Portugese cheese and crackers that we conveniently had on hand. We might have been a little less ‘affected’ had we had the wine with a full meal (which we’d had much earlier), but as it was, the evening went quite well anyway – LOL.

I’d recommend it for hearty chicken meals, and maybe pastas with heavy cream sauce, and garlic bread too – something on that order.

Flapjacks Restaurant

Flapjacks is one of the best breakfast and lunch restuarants I’ve ever
had the pleasure to eat in. It’s independently owned, and located in the
tiny town of Tres Pinos, California (pop 500).

We had lunch there the other day, Kristen ordered a cheeseburger which
was literally oozing melted (real) cheese, and I ordered the grilled
chicken sandwich which came with onions, peppers, avocado and Monterey
Jack. Did I same came with? Actually smothered would be more accurate.
Instead of one grilled hard slab of chicken breast, there were tasty
grilled chunks of chicken buried in the above mentioned toppings. I
couldn’t even see the bottom of my sandwich, which was thoughtfully
served with a steak knife, since there was no human way to actually pick
it up and eat it.

Both the sandwich and burger were served on a hearty sourdough roll. I’m
often disappointed at the quality of breads in many restaurants, even
some of the expensive restaurants out here serve bread that doesn’t even
equal our local supermarket’s. These rolls were delicious though, dense
and chewy, with a nice tangy flavor.

If you should find yourself visiting Pinnacles National Monument or just
cruising down Highway 25, then Flapjacks is by far the best restaurant along the way. The only drawback is that they’re only open until 2pm, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
